Building a Safer Future: CCB's Commitment During National Safety Month

June marks National Safety Month, an initiative led by the National Safety Council (NSC) to emphasize the importance of safety across various sectors, including construction. At Charles C. Brandt Construction (CCB), safety isn't just a monthly focus—it's a core value embedded in our daily operations.

The Importance of Safety in Construction

The construction industry inherently involves risks, with workers frequently exposed to hazards such as falls, equipment-related incidents, and exposure to harmful substances. According to the NSC, falls are the leading cause of death in construction, accounting for approximately 35% of all construction fatalities from 2011 to 2021. These statistics underscore the critical need for rigorous safety protocols and continuous education.nsc.org

CCB's Proactive Safety Measures

At CCB, we have implemented comprehensive safety measures to protect our team:

  • Weekly Safety Communications: Every Monday, our teams receive "Chuck's Safety Minute," a focused safety lesson that is reviewed and signed off by each team member, ensuring consistent awareness and engagement.

  • Daily JHA Review: Each morning, field teams conduct a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) review together to identify and address potential risks before work begins.

  • Pre-installation meetings: Before key scopes of work begin, our team holds coordination meetings with trade partners to align on safety expectations, logistics, and sequencing.

  • Certified Training: All superintendents and interested employees undergo CPR and AED certification, with renewals upon expiration, to prepare for emergency situations. OSHA 30

  • Dedicated Safety Leadership: Our Safety Director, Jason Hummel, brings 19 years of experience and holds certifications including CHST, STS-C, OSHA 510 and 500, among others. Jason conducts safety training for all new hires and regularly visits job sites to ensure compliance and address any concerns.

Recent Initiatives and Recognitions

In alignment with National Safety Month, CCB recently completed CPR and AED certification classes for numerous employees, reinforcing our commitment to emergency preparedness. Additionally, we observed National Mental Health Awareness Month in May, recognizing that mental well-being is integral to overall safety.

Industry-Wide Safety Concerns

Beyond physical hazards, the construction industry faces significant mental health challenges. A report by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) highlights that while approximately 1,000 construction workers die each year from work-related accidents, nearly five times as many workers die from suicide. This alarming statistic emphasizes the need for comprehensive safety programs that address both physical and mental health.

Our Ongoing Commitment

CCB remains steadfast in our dedication to fostering a safe and supportive work environment. We continuously evaluate and enhance our safety protocols, ensuring they meet or exceed industry standards. Our goal is not only to prevent accidents but also to promote a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.
